Unheralded Ese Brume of Nigeria has won gold in the women’s long jump at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a leap of 6.56 meters in the final this evening.

Brume had barely made it through to the final having leapt a distance of 6.22 meters in Group A of the qualifying round, with the Nigerian eventually finishing ahead of England’s Jazmin Sawyers who finished with 6.54m and Christabel Nettey of Canada with 6.48m.

Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare was unable to participate in the long jump event in her quest to win three gold medals, as it clashed with her 200m final race which she won in a time of 22.25 seconds.

Meanwhile, long jump favourite Shara Proctor was forced to withdraw from the final due to an injury while Barbara Stuart of the Bahamas fell well short of her qualifying mark after finishing eighth in the final, having leapt a distance of 6.67 to top Group B during the qualifying round.

Elsewhere tonight, Christian Cuevas-Morton of Nigeria finished fifth in the final of the men’s 400m hurdles won by South Africa’s Cornel Fredericks while in the women’s 100m hurdles, Nigerian duo Nichole Denby and Ugonna Ndu failed to qualify from their respective heats.

Denby finished third in Heat 3 with a time of 13.54 seconds while Ndu finished fifth in keenly contested Heat 1 in a time of 13.35 seconds, with England’s Tiffany Porter winning the heat in 12.84 seconds.

As a result of Brume and Okagbare’s heroics, Team Nigeria now occupies eighth place on the medals table with eight gold, six silver and 11 bronze medals. England leads the medals table with 44 gold medals while South Africa remains Africa’s highest ranked nation on the table with 11 gold medals.
