Team Nigeria Win Gold Medals

Team Nigeria added three more gold medals today at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow through Odunayo Adekuoroye, Aminat Adeniyi and Maryam Usman in wrestling and weightlifting.

Adekuoroye beat Lalita Lalita of India in the women’s 53kg freestyle to claim gold for Nigeria, breaking into a local dance on the mat to celebrate her win.

Nigeria won another gold in wrestling through Adeniyi, who defeated Sakshi Malik also of India in the final of the women’s 58kg freestyle.

A third gold medal came from weightlifting through Maryam Usman who came out tops in the women’s +75kg category, lifting a total of 280kg to finish ahead of Samoa’s Ele Opeloge.

Usman lifted 125kg in the snatch to lead the field heading into the clean and jerk, where she lifted 155kg to claim gold with some ease.

As a result of the medals, Team Nigeria now occupies eighth position on the table with six gold medals, a place and three gold medals behind South Africa.
