The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has elected Mr. Augustine Alegeh, SAN as its new President.

He will succeed Okey Wali, also a senior advocate of Nigeria.

Alegeh hails from the Mid West zone of the bar, which in Nigeria’s political mapping falls under  the South South, which produced Wali.

Alegeh polled 691 votes to defeat his closest rival, Mr. Dele Adesina, who polled 370 votes.

Mrs. Funke Adekoya SAN, polled 255, while Mr Niyi Akintola SAN,  had 120 votes. Mr Justus Erhabor, also from the Mid-West zone  polled 17 votes to place fifth.

The presidency of the association was zoned to the South West of Nigeria. But the three  candidates from the zone refused to build a consensus, leading to Alegeh’s emergence. Alegeh also laid claim to being a part of the South West, geographically speaking. But observers believe that the election had set a precedence in the organisation and zoning may have died with this election.

The President-elect,  Alegeh  and all newly elected officials of the association will be sworn in on the last day of the Annual General Conference of the NBA to be held in Owerri, Imo State between August 24 and 29
