Fed Cup: Shock Exit for Gombe as Heartland, Sharks Edge Through

Nigeria Premier League outfit Gombe United suffered a shock exit to a lower league opponent in one of the 2014 Federation Cup round of 64 matches played across the country on Wednesday.

Struggling in the Nigeria Premier League where it is second from bottom midway through the 2014 season, Gombe United’s misery got compounded in a 2-1 defeat to Baton FC in Ilorin.

Elsewhere, Ilorin based Nigeria National League side Kwara United forced Premier League side Sharks FC to penalties following a 1-1 draw at the of 90 minutes in Benin.

The Afonja Warriors would however fall 4-3 on penalties as Sharks eventually prevailed to the next round, joined by Owerri side Heartland that defeated Ebonyi United 4-3 on penalties as well following a 1-1 draw.

Defending champions Enyimba qualified for the next round with little hitch, coming from a goal down to defeat Sokoto North 3-1 in Abuja while goals from Ebube Okpokwu, Ifeanyi Egwim and Emem Eduok gave four-time champions Dolphins a 3-1 win over Ingas FC.

Elsewhere, Nembe City got a 2-0 win against CBN Cashless FC, FC Taraba overcame AS Racine via penalties and a stoppage time penalty by Samuel Chukwudi saw Bayelsa United get a lone goal win against Remo Stars.

Abia Warriors beat Marafa United 2-0 in their round of 64 match while Nasarawa United got a 3-2 win over Young Elephants to qualify for the round of 32.
