Abuja – The Directorate of Road Traffic Services, popularly known as Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), said on Wednesday that the ban on tricycle operations in the FCT was to improve security.

Mr Aminu Iro, Deputy Director in the directorate, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Iro explained that the ongoing efforts by the FCT Administration to rid Abuja highways of tricycles would also reduce road traffic snarl and accidents.

While saying that the tricycle operators have been given designated routes in FCT, they have chosen to constitute nuisance on Abuja highways.

According to him, restricting their operations to specific areas is to ensure their safety and that of commuters.

“Operators of tricycles have violated the ban on them by the FCT administration.

“And their operation in the highways is a security threat,” said the director.

He noted that the tricycle operators chose to operate in their areas of choice out of stubbornness.

Iro explained that by the Road Traffic Regulation they were expected to operate within housing estates in the FCT.

The deputy director listed the areas as Kubwa, Gwarimpa, Sun City, Apo/Gudu and Lugbe, among others.

“We advised them to be law abiding citizens by returning to the designated areas of operations for them such as housing estates, among others, as stipulated by law,” he said.

Iro said 524 tricycles which violated the ban in the city centre had been impounded.

Besides paying fines, the official warned that the violators would face prosecution as part of measures to enforce the law.
