Kaduna – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday said it would mount strategic campaign nationwide to end voter apathy ahead of 2015 general elections.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kaduna State, Alhaji Haliru Tambawel, said this in Kaduna while inaugurating a 16-member Interagency Advisory Committee on voter education and publicity in the state.

He said deliberate misinformation by politicians had affected the perception of Nigerians towards the commission and its activities, adding that efforts would be made to restore people’s confidence.

“The aim is to talk to people in the right manner for them to be well informed; people worked on misinformation which needed to be corrected before 2015 elections.”

He said the inauguration of the committee was part of INEC’s agenda to attract Nigerians still sceptical on the electoral process to participate in it.

“The commission identified low level of voter education and awareness on electoral matters by citizens as one of the major reasons for apathy and resultant low participation,” he said.

The commissioner, therefore, urged the committee to reverse the trend by promoting positive attitudes among the electorate to comply with electoral laws, stop violence and malpractice.

Tambawel expressed optimism that the 2015 elections would be free, fair and credible.

The committee consists of representatives from the media, labour, religious groups and government agencies.
