San Antonio Spurs put in a robust performance to claim the 2014 NBA title after a 104-87 win over dethroned champions Miami Heat gave the Spurs an unassailable 4-1 series lead at the end of Game 5 at the AT&T Center.

Kawhi Leonard led the scoring for Spurs with his 22 points and 10 rebounds on his way to a winning a first ring in his career. Leonard was also named Most Valuable Player of the Finals.

Veteran Tim Duncan, who now has five rings, finished with 14 points for Spurs, Tony Parker had 16 points, Patty Mills had five three-pointers to end the game with 17 points including 14 in the third quarter alone while Manu Ginobili had 19 points.

LeBron James scored a game high 31 points for Miami Heat but his good form was again in vain as only Chris Bosh with 13 points and Dwayne Wade in 11 points managed to hit double figures for Heat.

However it seemed Miami Heat would come away from the AT&T alive in the series initially, racing to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter with LeBron scoring 17 points for Miami.

Spurs would however rally in incredible fashion to hold a 47-40 lead by the end of the second quarter, before extending their advantage to 77-58 by the end of the third as Miami were restricted to just 36 points in two quarters following their blistering start.

The win gives San Antonio Spurs a fifth NBA title since 1999 and also avenges last year’s NBA Finals which saw Miami Heat win the championship against Spurs in a dramatic seven-game series.

Spurs’ triumph also kept Miami Heat from achieving a 3peat having won the 2012 crown as well. This will be the second Finals loss in four years for Miami Heat.
