Abuja – Thousands of prospective retirees from Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies on Thursday in Abuja embarked on verification and enrolment in preparation for their retirement in 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise was organised by the National Pension Commission (PenCom) for Federal Government Employees due for retirement in 2015.

The exercise, which started since June 9, is expected to end on June 13 at the Women Development Centre, Abuja.

Civil Servants, the Paramilitary and other public servants from agencies and parastatals were also present at the exercise.

Some of the prospective retirees told NAN that the exercise was tedious but well organised.

According to the retirees, they are expected to meet with their desk officers to fill necessary forms before they can proceed for verification of their documents and bio-metric capturing.

Mr Emmanuel Agbor, a prospective retiree from office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation told NAN that the enrolment was very strenuous.

“It is very strenuous. The organisers should be able to see the number that are coming, and then organise them properly.

VWhy bring everybody together when you cannot handle everybody at the same time. It is very disgusting, he said.

Another prospective retiree from the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mr Mathias Anankpa, said that he found the process unduly long and tedious.

“I was not aware of what to come with, only for me to come and I had to go back to get some documents and come back again.

“There are too many people with very few officers from PenCom to attend to all quickly.

“So you end up spending days on something that shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes,” he said.

Mrs Veronica Nweze, another prospective retiree, urged PenCom to endeavour to provide sufficient materials and officials to conduct the exercise in the future.

She stressed the need to avoid the stampede that nearly occurred at the venue because of insufficient materials and personnel.

The official of PenCom, who spoke to NAN under condition of anonymity, said that the exercise was a normal verification and enrolment for official due for retirement in 2015.

According to him, special arrangement was made for senior officers from Deputy Director and above.

He noted that some of the complaints by the prospective retirees were noted and would be addressed by the commission.
