Ibadan – The Ibadan North Local Government on Tuesday organised a training programme on agriculture for 150 unemployed youths from the 12 wards in the council area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the participants were trained on poultry and bee keeping, catfish farming, moringa olifera production as well as sheep and goat rearing.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the programme, the Caretaker Chairman of the council, Mr Idris Lapade, said the initiative was to tackle unemployment.

He said successful participants would be given loans and two plots of land to begin their own agricultural outfits.

“The importance of this training programme cannot be overemphasised considering the economic value of agriculture to the economy of the country.

“If the Federal Government really wants to achieve sustainable peace and security across the country, it needs to empower youths because an idle hand is the devil’s workshop.

“That is what we are doing in Ibadan North Local Government,” Lapade said.

The chairman called on all well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to partner with government at all levels to empower youths.

One of the participants, Fajimi Amos, said the programme was an eye-opener to what youths could achieve if empowered.

Amos commended the council for organising the programme, saying it would promote self employment.

The resource person at the programme, Najeem Sikiru, urged the participants to utilise the opportunity provided by the training to become self employed.
