Ikorodu (Lagos State) – A 33-year-old man, Akin Olajire, was on Tuesday brought before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly obtaining N1.5 million by false pretences.

Olajire, 33, who lives in Parafa, Jaiyesimi Estate, along Ijebu-Ode Road, Ikorodu, is facing a charge of obtaining money by false pretences.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Mary Ajiteru, said that the accused obtained N1.5 million from the complainant, one Mr Ademola Olowonisaye, on the pretext of helping him to buy a Toyota Camry car.

She said: “The accused committed the offence on June 20, 2012, at Jaiyesimi Estate, along Ijebu-Ode Road, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

“He pretended to be a car dealer and obtained the sum from the complainant.

“He kept promising the complainant that the container bringing the car to Nigeria would soon arrive and later disappeared without delivering the good.

“The accused was apprehended and reported to the police.”

Ajiteru said that the offence contravened Section 312(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Olajire, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N500, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr W.B. Balogun, said the sureties should be residing within the court’s jurisdiction and must show evidence of tax payment.

He adjourned the case till June 19 for further hearing.
