Italian club Atalanta have received a £32,000 fine from the disciplinary tribunal following a racism incident during the club’s Serie A match against AC Milan last weekend.

The fine came hours after FIFA President Sepp Blatter in a tweet clamoured sanctions from national associations for racism and incidents of hooligalism in football matches.

Fans of Atalanta had thrown bananas onto the field, with one landing near Milan’s Guinean defender Kevin Constant, who showed it to the match referee before it was thrown to the sidelines by teammate Nigel de Jong.

In a statement, Atalanta revealed that club president Antonio Percassi had telephoned Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani to apologise and would also call Milan defender Constant to apologise.

Atalanta’s fine comes a week after Spanish club Villarreal was fined for a similar incident involving Brazilian defender Dani Alves during a Primera Liga match against Barcelona.
