The Nigeria Copyright Commission (NCC) on Wednesday said no fewer than 30 persons were arrested in Edo and Delta for piracy from August 2013 to date.

Mr Augustine Amodu, the Director of Enforcement, NCC, disclosed this during a press briefing with newsmen in Benin.

Amudo said that the commission also carried out not less than 10 convictions in both states during the period.

He said that three suspects involved in cable broadcast piracy and six suspects involved in the sales of pirated optical discs were arrested recently in Delta and Edo, respectively.

“NCC carried out an anti-piracy raid in Warri in Delta on April 15 this year and arrested three suspects who were involved in cable broadcast piracy.

“About N4 million worth of contrabands were seized and the suspects are now in our custody.

“We are warning those involve in this illicit trade to desist from it and stop all forms of broadcast piracy including house to house wiring for illegal cable broadcast.

“About five members of our casual staff were injured during the raid in Warri.

“The copyright commission did an anti-piracy raid in a court premises in Benin where pirated copies of a book written by a lawyer was sold.

“The members of the bar association were kind enough to let us know that they will bring the suspect to our office.

“Another anti piracy raid was conducted in Benin on optical disc of Nigerian musical and video works.

“We recovered about 500, 000 pirated optical disc and six suspects were arrested,’’ he said.

Amodu said it was unfortunate that people preferred to reap where they did not sow, adding that piracy was a cankerworm that had eaten deep into the fabric of this nation.

He urged members of the public to stop buying pirated works, saying that what made other countries great apart from mineral resources were intellectual properties.
