As rightly predicted by this medium, Guinea’s military leader, Gen Mamadi Doumbouya, has won the December 28 elections, with 86.72% landslide, with his immediate contender, Yero Balde, with 6.51% votes.
The final results were announced last night by the country’s election management body, amidst thunderous applause by many Guineans who seem satisfied with Gen Doumbouya’s populist projects and youthful acquiescence.
The election was widely seen as a patched-up democratic process, as it was conducted in an atmosphere of fear. Prominent political figures are barred or in exile.
ECOWAS has maintained sealed lips, insisting on the election to go ahead, stating it is the beginning of a New Democratic process, with citizens queuing at polling stations to vote, irrespective of the contender.
Guinea is a resource-rich country, bordering Sierra Leone and Liberia.
It is the only French West African country that does not belong to the CFA monetary currency, with its local Guinea Franc.
Its first leader, Ahmed Sekou Toure, radically broke ranks with colonial master, France.
He was succeeded by Lansana Conte, then Prof Alpha Conde, who was toppled by Gen Doumbouya in a coup in September 2021.
He is now the new civilian President of Guinea, pending a Supreme Court 8-day window, in the event of a challenge of the results
