Pensioners, workers endorse Govemor Yusuf’s second term bid as he clears N48b gratuity arrears

Leaders of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Wednesday, jointly endorsed the second term bid of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, ahead of the 2027 governorship election, in appreciation of his promise to settle the N48 billion gratuity and death benefits owed pensioners in Kano by previous administrations.

National and state leaders of the two unions gave the endorsement during the flag-off payment of the 5th tranche of retirees’ gratuity and death benefits, held at Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.

Governor Yusuf supervised the immediate electronic payment of N5 billion to over 500 pensioners benefiting from the 5th tranche of payment.

According to him, over N27 billion has already been paid to the retirees, promising that his government is determined to clear the remnant of the  N48 billion arrears in subsequent tranches.

He emphasized that the payment is part of efforts to restore the dignity of retired workers and alleviate the hardships faced by families of deceased civil servants.

Governor Yusuf also revealed that plans have been concluded by his administration to disburse N350,000 interest-free grants each to over 4000 youths across the 44  Local Government Areas to enable them to establish businesses that will make them self-reliant.

He also announced that thousands of women from across the 44 Local Government Areas will receive N50,000 each to set up small-scale businesses to support their families and fight poverty.

The President of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Godwin Abumisi, commended  Governor  Yusuf for his kind gesture and urged pensioners in Kano state to massively support the second term bid of the Governor in appreciation of his commitment to their welfare and well-being.

The chairman of the Kano state chapter of NUP, Comrade Shua’abu Musa, said pensioners in the state have been enjoying Governor Yusuf’s kindness and goodwill since 2023.

Musa promised that pensioners will rally round the Governor in his bid to actualize his second-term ambition in 2027.

The Executive Chairman, Kano State Pension Fund Trustee,  Habu Muhammad  Fagge, confirmed that the Board had a backlog of N48 billion, out of which N27 billion has been paid.

The former National  President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba P. Wabba, commended Governor Yusuf for his friendly posture and show of kindness to pensioners.

He assured Governor Yusuf that workers and pensioners in the state and across Nigeria are fully behind him, promising that they will reciprocate his kind gesture.

Also speaking, the Kano state chairman of NLC, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa, confirmed that Governor Yusuf has been giving adequate attention to their requests and demands as salaries are being paid to workers as when due.

The Emir of Rano, Muhammad Isa Umar, commended Governor Yusuf’s efforts, particularly towards retirees, workers, and all Kano residents, irrespective of religious and political affiliations.
