Abubakar Hashim
September 8, 2025, marked 90 years since the birth of my mother, Mrs Jamila Olivet Hashim, who was born on September 8, 1935. She was wedded to the late Alhaji Uba Hashim, of blessed memory.
Mommy Jem O H, as she is fondly called, has lived a very successful life, worth emulating. Her type hardly exists today, due to her clean-heartedness.
Having been schooled at St Joseph’s primary and secondary school, she started her work career at the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority, SLPHA, as a pioneer staff member in 1957.
She worked at the Port meritoriously until her retirement in 1992, with 35 years of uninterrupted service.

Till today, her name rings a sound bell within the Ports, due to her motherly care to all Ports workers, irrespective of status, ethnicity or tribal colouration.
It was due to her sterling qualities in Ports operations that her late husband, Alhaji Uba Hashim, who migrated from Kano in Northern Nigeria to Sierra Leone, paved the way to gain easy entrance to the Ports, to ship cola nuts and allied products from Freetown to Lagos, a trade that enabled him to be richly successful.
It was a day of prayers to the Almighty to continue to bless her with good health and to pray for her late husband to rest in perfect peace and forgiveness from Allah, to grant him Al Jannah Firdau.
Happy Birthday to a woman of regal splendour and unparalleled lustre, Mommy Jem O H!!!
