*Dares anybody to attempt to disrupt RSIEC, LGA poll
Okafor Ofiebor/Port Harcourt
Amidst rumours of plans by unnamed persons to allegedly disrupt the forthcoming local government elections, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has declared that the planned Local Government Election will be held on 5th October 2024.
He said there is no legal impediment to stop the conduct of the election and nobody,no matter how highly placed should attempt to disrupt the forthcoming local government.
Governor Fubara gave the assurance on Monday when he visited the Secretariat of Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) located along the Port Harcourt -Aba Expressway.
On arrival, Governor Fubara was received by the chairman of RSIEC, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd) and other principal staff.
Governor Fubara who was visibly angry said: “I went for inspection, Trans-Kalabari road under construction so I said I should stop by. I have been hearing that people are planning to come here, so I wanted to come see myself.
“I hope you are prepared for the election because that is what I want to hear. Prepared for the election.
“What is important for me is that Rivers State has to be alive. It doesn’t belong to anybody. I don’t care who nominated you but do the right thing, that is what is important to me, because if we make a mistake today, is going to live with us forever.
“Nobody has a right to come here. This is the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission. It belongs to Rivers State. So, if there is anything, let me know, I will come here myself.
“If any idiot, no matter how highly placed, and if any Policemen that is not authorized comes here, just let me know.
“Our election will be held on the 5th of October. RSIEC told me they already had an order mandating them to conduct the election on the 5th and the security agencies to support them. So, I think with that order, the election would hold.
“I might not be a lawyer, but I know there is something they call first-in-hand, and since they have the first-in-hand, we will give them all the necessary support for that election to be conducted and it would be one of the best elections ever held in Rivers State, free and fair.”
