The Nasarawa State Government has donated N10 million and assorted relief materials to people displaced by the lingering violence in the state.

A representative of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Mr Boniface Ifer, who is the President, Tiv Development Association (TIDA) in Nasarawa, confirmed receipt of the money and the relief materials to newsmen on Sunday in Lafia.

Ifer, who thanked Gov. Umaru Al-Makura for the gesture, said that the money and the items were already being distributed to the IDPs.

“Al-Makura’s instruction is that the money and items are strictly for victims who fled their homes in the wake of the renewed attacks on some Tiv communities by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen.

“We have met with the stakeholders and worked out modalities for the sharing of the money and items. There are IDPs in four local governments – Keana, Obi, Doma and Awe. All of them will benefit,” he said.

He said that each local government was being represented by two persons in the sharing committee, adding that the donations were being disbursed through the Tiv clans in the local governments.

The TIDA official said that the gesture would cushion the effect of the attacks on the victims, but urged the state government to beef up security in the affected communities to enable the IDPs return home to start farming.

“We appreciate this humane gesture but what these IDPs really need is security to go back to their homes because the cropping season is fast approaching,” he said.

The New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the items included 150 bags of rice, 78 bags of beans, 78 bags of Maize, 45 bags each, of cassava flour and blankets, among others.
