Ibrahim Useni who allegedly slit the throat of his girlfriend, Jenifer Odiase, was on Wednesday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs A.S. Okubule, ordered the remand of the accused at the Ikoyi Prisons pending an outcome of legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The accused, a water vendor popularly known as “mai ruwa”, whose plea was not taken was arraigned at the court on a murder charge.
Earlier, Insp. Chinalu Uwadione, the police prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 25 at about 2 p.m, at Harry Hotel, Badagry Expressway.
He alleged that the accused used a knife to slit the throat of his girlfriend because the deceased had spent the daily contribution which he kept in her care.
“The accused had asked the deceased to hand over the daily contribution from the sales he made from fetching and selling water he kept in her care but the deceased could not and in anger, Useni brought out a knife and slit her throat,” the prosecutor said.
The offence contravened Section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The law stipulates a death sentence for convicts.
Okubule ordered that the accused be kept behind bars.
She adjourned the case till Jan. 19, 2018, pending receipt of the legal advice.
