It was sorrows and tears for residents of Mgbosimili-Rumueme, a suburb of Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers state as no fewer 15 persons from the community were allegedly killed at about 3 am on Monday by unknown gunmen who went from house-to-house shooting people for yet to be ascertained reasons.

The Rivers State Police Command through it Spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident. But said the motive behind the killings has not been ascertained.

“It is quite an unfortunate incident. We can confirm it. Our men are already there. I will be going there myself. The cause of the incident is not yet known, but in no time we will be able to know,” Omoni said.

A resident of the area said they were woken in the early hours of Monday morning by the sporadic gun shots and they had to call for help.

“At about 3.30 am we started hearing gun shots at Slaughter (abattoir) area by the Waterside of Mgboshimili-Rumueme. But not too long after, I heard a call that I should come immediately that one of my brothers had been killed. When I got there I was able to confirm that indeed one was one of our ‘helpers’ in the Slaughter (abattoir). I was also able to see corpses,  about 11 lying on the floor.”

However, some residents of the Mgboshimil-Rumueme are alleging that the killings may not be unconnected with the killing of Chief Miniku Chukwu who was shot in broad daylight during a recent community meeting.
