Union leaders in Ogun State have been charged to adopt moderate approach in pushing forward their requests to government.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun who gave the charge at the 2017 World Teachers’ Day held at the Memorial Arcade Ground in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, noted that no meaningful results could be achieved in an atmosphere of rancour.

He said that even though it was the fundamental right of workers to agitate for their rights, yet they should display a level of understanding in doing so.

“It is the fundamental right of workers to unionize, but let me charge all our labour union leaders to show understanding in their requests, as no meaningful result can be achieved in the atmosphere of rancour,’’ Amosun said.

The Governor explained that teachers were pivotal to transmitting knowledge, values and morals in the children which were necessary tools for effecting positive change in the nation. He assured that government would continue to give needed attention to issues bordering on welfare of the teachers with a promise that payment of their leave bonus would begin in earnest.

Earlier in her welcome address, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Modupe Mujota urged teachers to position themselves to take full advantage of the 21st century teaching opportunities, develop genuine interest in their profession and be information technology compliant to adequately impart knowledge.

Mujota noted that the present administration expected unalloyed cooperation and commitment from the teaching staff, enjoining them to always work hand in hand with government to continually improve the State’s education standard.

In their addresses, the Chairmen National Union of Teachers (NUT) and Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) Mr. Titi Adebanjo and Mr. Akeem Lasisi, appreciated the Government for their continuous support for the education sector in the State, promising that the teacher would not let them down.
