A septuagenarian, Adebayo Kareem , who allegedly collected N250, 000 on the pretext of securing a job for a man in the Nigerian Army, was on Tuesday brought before an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court.
Kareem, 70, is facing a two-count charge of theft and fraud.
According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Adegoke Taiwo, the accused committed the offences sometimes in 2014 at Ofatedo area of Osogbo.
Taiwo alleged that the accused defrauded a woman, Mrs Olawunmi Alilat on the pretext of assisting her son , Olawunmi Jamiu, to secure a job as a soldier through his son a serving military officer in Edo.
He said when the accused refused to pay back the money to the complainant, she reported the case to the police and he was arrested and brought to court.
The offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and his lawyer, Mr Najite Okobie, urged the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.
The Magistrate, Mrs Olubukola Awodele, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 and one surety in the like sum.
Awodele said the surety must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction with an evidence of tax payment.
NAN reports that the case was adjourned until Nov. 24 for hearing.
