The Association of Kebbi State Medical Students on Scholarship in India (AKEMSSI ) has written an open letter to to the Kebbi State government, appealing that it looks into their problems in the areas of tuition fees, upkeep allowances, accommodation, e-paasport and others.

In the open letter signed by Ibrahim Abubakar Makiga, Hamisu Ibrahim, Usman Ladan, the students said they had to go epistolary as a last resort to call for the attention of Governor Atiku Bagudu, as all attempts and tries to reach out to the state governor through proper channels were fruitless.

They wrote: “Your Excellency, please permit us to bring to your notice the difficulties, plights and struggles faced by Kebbi state students on scholarship in India. The Kebbi state government currently has a total number of 24 medical students (MBBS & BDS) in their last year of studies in India.”

Your Excellency Sir, please understand that we use this medium as a last resort to call for your attention, as all attempts and tries to reach out to you through proper channels turned in vain.

Your Excellency, please permit us to bring to your notice the difficulties, plights and struggles faced by Kebbi state students on scholarship in India. The Kebbi state government has currently a total number of 24 medical students (MBBS & BDS) in their last year of studies in India.

The followings are few of the hardships experienced by the above mentioned students :

TUITION FEES :The students who are left with tuition fees ( MBBS & BDS)are facing challenges, as the colleges are threatening that all privileges which they have would be withdrawn.That is, issue of bonafide letter for visa extension, allowing student to sit for examinations and documentation required for any personal as well as official process.

All of us here are on the verge of completing our course and we won’t get our documents ,completion certificate and licences to practice which is the most primary aim of coming here in the first place.

ACCOMMODATION :As we all know studies by a student without a shelter is a very challenging task. Many of us (MBBS & BDS students ) have been evicted from their apartments due to the failure to pay the outstanding rent fees.

UPKEEP ALLOWANCES : For a student to be able to carry out daily academic activities he/she requires a good nutritional diet, but due to our inability to receive our upkeep allowances we hardly feed ourselves. It has now been more than a year we have not received a single penny from the state government. Dated April 2016.

E-PASSPORT : Living in any foreign country with an expired E-passport is a criminal offence. Our E-passports have very few weeks to expire from now,this calls for the immediate renewal of our E-passport before the expiry date and we lack the money to do so.

Most of us come from poor families, our parents cannot afford to sponsor our studies outside Nigeria. They even tried to be sending us some money but they failed to continue doing so due to the current increased in exchange rate and their struggles with other family members back home.

We appeal to the state Government and all relevant bodies to save the Kebbi State students on scholarship in India.
