The federal government has sponsored surgeries for cataract for 30 indigent persons in the free medical outreach it organised at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Esan South-East local government area of Edo state.
Besides, 50 other persons received treatment for herniorrhaphies, myornectomy, prolapse and vesicovaginal fistula, also known as VVF.
The Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Prof. Sylvanus Okogbenin, disclosed this during the closing ceremony of the Rapid Result Initiative of President Muhammadu Buhari in Ubiaja.
He explained that the beneficiaries were treated at a comprehensive health centre of the Hospital.
According to the Chief Medical Director, the annual programme was part of government’s efforts to extend a helping hand to the less privileged and ameliorate their sufferings, even as he commended the President for the initiative.
“The exercise is a collaborative arrangement between the Federal Ministry of Health and the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital. It would be carried out on an annual basis,” Prof. Okogbenin said.
Okogbenin explained that the beneficiaries were drawn from Edo Central and Edo North senatorial districts, while another phase of the programme would commence later in the year.
Co-ordinator of the health centre, Dr. Ajekweneh Agbomherele, in his comment, appreciated the host community for facilitating the construction of the doctors’ quarters in the area as well as supporting medical activities in the community.
