Doctors urge UCH to honour agreement on welfare

Resident Doctors of the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan has appealed to the authority of the to honour the June 16, 2016 agreement reached at a stakeholders meeting convened and mediated by the Speaker of the House of Representative, Hon. Yakubu Dogara.

The doctors who had earlier berated the hospital’s authority for breaching the agreement said that the implementation of the agreement would enhance smooth running of the hospital.

Rising from their 48th Annual General Meeting themed, “Legislating health Care: Emerging trends and implications on the common man”, the doctors observed that only doctors in UCH are paid part salaries despite shouldering the greatest bulk of responsibilities in patient care and sustenance of the institution

It noted that such unjust practice is inimical to harmony and fair play in any organisation especially on the background of prevailing harsh economic condition that pervades the country

Addressing the press at the end of the AGM of the resident doctors, ARD President, Dr. Olusegun Olaopa urged the management to prioritise the welfare of her workers.

Olaopa said, “We appeal to the management of the University College Hospital to honor the agreements reached at the meeting with the honourable speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Yakubu Dogara in the interest of the compromising harmonious relationship at the Institution.

“All agreements reached at the meeting between relevant stakeholders convened and mediated by the Hon. Dogara have been breached by the management despite repeated appeal to the management to allow peace to reign.

“Our members have however shown restraints thus far in the interest of the common man. We strongly appeal to the management of the hospital to prioritise the welfare of her workers and especially the doctor-workforce who have been at the receiving end of most harsh administrative policies of the institution”.

Continuing, “There is gross shortage of doctors at the university College Hospital, the result of which is escalated work burden on the already fatigue and ill motivated doctor workforce.

“Only doctors in UCH are paid part salaries despite shouldering the greatest bulk of responsibilities in patient care and sustenance of the institution. That such unjust practice is inimical to harmony and fair play in any organisation especially on the background of prevailing harsh economic condition that pervades the country”.

He further called on the management to ensure speedy completion of the abandoned phase 3 of the house officers’ residence and renovation of the dilapidated residential quarters of the house officers while also calling for the employment of resident doctors to fill in vacant spaces to reduce the burden of work which has endangered the health and training or resident doctors.
