Gunmen on bicycles suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists killed at least eight people outside a church inKwamjilari village, about 30 kilometres from Chibok, in Borno state, according to local residents.

Residents said the attack happened shortly after the weekly service on Sunday.

“Some of the worshippers remained around the church and the gunmen opened fire and eight men died,” AFP quoted Luka Damina, from nearby Kautikeri village.

“Unknown to the residents, the gunmen had stationed some of their comrades on the road leading out of the village and they shot anyone who tried to flee,” AFP quoted residents of the area as saying.

They added that many people ran into the bush with gunshot injuries and only eight deaths can be confirmed so far.

A local chief also said the gunmen set fire to homes and  maize farms were almost ready for harvest.

He added that soldiers were later deployed to Kwamjilari from Chibok where over 200 schoolgirls were abducted by the insurgent group in April 2014.

10 people were killed in a similar hit and run attack in the area in August.  The Nigerian military is yet to confirm the recent attack.
