Former President Goodluck Jonathan has emphasized his opposition to the disintegration of Nigeria which some militant groups in the Niger Delta region has been advocating for in recent times.

The former President who is also from the Niger Delta like some of the advocates of disintegration of Nigeria spoke to journalists after a less than 20 minutes closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock presidential villa on Wednesday.

Jonathan who told journalists that he met with his successor to intimate him of his recent international engagements said he is already working with other leaders in the Niger Delta region to quell the crisis and agitations for for breakup of the country.

The former President who said he has always briefed his successor about his international engagements said he was in the Villa specifically to brief the President on his appointment as leader of AU elections monitoring team to Zambia and other international engagement as is the tradition.

On efforts being made to calm agitations for breakup of the country by some militant groups, the former President said he is working with other leaders of Ijaw ethnic nationality to engender peace across the country.

“It’s not just about me but about all the traditional rulers, elders and opinion leaders that are of the Ijaw ethnic nationality; we have been in touch to see that peace reigns in the country.

“Those of you that have followed my talks when I was here, my emphasis is that we need a united Nigeria and I always emphasize that Nigeria is great not just about the oil – so many countries produce more oil than Nigeria nobody notices them.

“We are great because of our size, the human resources we have, the diversity we have, if we fragmentise the country into small components we will be forgotten by the world.”

“That has been my focal position and without peace, there cannot be development anywhere in the world.

“We are all working collectively to see that issues are resolved.”

He however refused to talk on the ongoing anti-corruption campaign of President Buhari which has resulted in arraignment of many of his former appointees, aides and members of Peoples Democratic Party on corruption charges at different courts.

“I don’t want to talk about that one because there are too many cases that are in court, it will not be fair to make comments, I will talk at the appropriate time when most of these things are resolved,” the former President said when prompted by journalist.
