A 37-year-old man, Ali Lawal, was on Friday docked before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly obtaining the sum of N41.3 million under false pretences.
The accused is facing an eight-count charge bordering on obtaining under false pretences, stealing and issuing a dud cheque.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Chinalu Uwadione, had told the court that the offences were committed on Oct. 15, at Plot 225, Moshood Abiola Way, Iganmu.
He alleged that the accused was contracted to sell a Yokohama Diesel Engine valued at N41.3million, but after selling it off, failed to remit the money to the owner of the engine.
He said that the accused, in a bid to offset his debt, issued five dud UBA cheques which were dishonoured due to lack of sufficient funds.
Uwadione noted that the offences contravened Sections 285, 312, 313 and 319 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Yemisi Adelaja, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N2million, with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the matter to May 24, for mention.
