Maritime activities closed for the week as a terminal operator, Five Star Logistics Ltd., compensated two families of deceased dockworkers with N5 million each.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the deceased dockworkers: Mr Samson Onyonya and Mr Pius Ifah lost their lives at separate incidents, while on duty at the Tin-Can Island port.

In addition to the N5 million cheque presented to Mr Christopher Ifah, the son of late Mr Pius Ifah, the stevedoring company gave him a cheque for N750, 000.

The terminal operator also gave a cheque for N5 million to the family of late Samson Onyonya, while the stevedoring company gave the family another cheque for N800, 000.

Chief Clement Imoh, a representative of the company’s management, made the presentations to each of the next-of-kin of the deceased dockworkers.

He was also said to have commiserated with them over the loss of their beloved ones and urged them to bear the irreparable loss.

He thanked the President of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Mr Adewale Adeyanju, for his presence at the presentation and support for the families.

Imoh expressed gratitude to the families for their understanding and patience.

The President of the MWUN appreciated the management of the terminal for the laudable gesture of compensating the families of the deceased workers.

He, however, charged the company on the need to take safety issues more seriously, in order to guard against the recurrence of such incidents at the terminal.

He appealed to the families to ensure proper administration of the money, to avoid wastage.
