The governors of the 19 northern states met in Kaduna to discuss and strategize on how to put end to problems of insecurity and poverty threatening the region.

The closed meeting at the General Hassan Usman Katsina State House, Kaduna, had in attendance governors of Kaduna, Jigawa, Kano, Borno, Zamfara, Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, Bauchi and deputy governors of Kogi, Kwara among others.

The Chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum, NSGV, Governor Kassim Shettima of Borno State, who addressed journalists before the meeting went into a closed door, said there is the urgent need for the northern leaders to adopt a practical and integrated regional approach towards combating the menace of not only insurgency and poverty, but also illiteracy and other criminal elements in the region.

He also called on the northern governors that are attending the meeting for the first time to come up with a common agenda for the speedy transformation of the north and the country in general.

Governor Shettima who lamented the failure on side of the present crop of leaders to sustain the legacies of the founding fathers of the northern region, said the new leaders must act fast to reverse the negative fortunes of the people of the region. According to him, no amount of lamentation will solve the devastation in the region, except for the leaders to rise up and live up to the expectations of the people through good governance.

Where is the Ombudsman? The authority whom people will call if a government official is not on seat? Where is the agency for marked money which Kaduna Textile limited managers UNTL managers can go to for marked money to give rogue custom officers and add agents before essential import Inputs for manufacturing can be cleared? When will the the states declare that teachers and hospital workers will always be paid on time bar none

They need to come up with a coordinated economic blue print to revive AREWA Industries – a commonwealth of the people of Northern Nigeria. Commonwealth/assets owned by Northern Region and then sub-states e.g Benue-Plateau, Old Kwara, Old Gongola, Old Kaduna, Old Sokoto etc prior to states-creation should also be looked at and managed appropriately as legacies ….looking at this would be a good foundation for the North to pull itself up from the doldrums – Free movement of goods, services and people should also be encouraged in the spirit of the old North which should deb seen as an economic community to be marshaled for development. With Humility, hard work and the ethos of the old Northern region – Fear of God and Hardwork – The sky is the limit!
