Members of the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans, CANAN have expressed deep concern over the recent 5-4 divided decision of the US Supreme Court on the issue of Gay Marriage.
A statement issued today by the National Secretariat of CANAN in New York described the land mark ruling as an aberration and ‘very unfortunate’.
Here is the full statement by the association:
As believers in the gospel of grace and love, we advocate love, grace and mercy to all people of all categories, for without them no man or woman can stand. We welcome everyone into the commonwealth of God’s abiding love.
However we know that God rules in the affairs of nations and he is the one that ordained the institution of marriage, not man or history. Any attempt to legislate or change this divine institution by man, public or court rulings is an aberration. It remains strictly a union between man and woman; this is the truth, our belief as Christians and our undivided stand.
Time and time again the Word of God is tested by man, either knowingly or unknowingly, this case is no exception. The mere fact that the Supreme Court of the United States of America, (our dear country built upon the pillars of Christianity) has chosen a path that attempts to redefined what God has said is demoralizing and challenging to the Christian faith.
This is truly unfortunate, yet does not wipe off the handwriting of God in scriptures with respect to the definition of marriage between man and woman. Genesis 2:24 : “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
CANAN therefore reaffirm that the June 26, 2015, 5-4 decision by United States Supreme Court, that requires all states to issue a license to marry between all people of the same sex and to recognize same-sex marriages validly performed in other jurisdictions completely contradicts our belief and the Godly principles guiding our organization, the same principles upon which America has flourished.
Finally, we refer to Galatians 5:19-21: Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
CANAN will not relent in praying that righteousness will prevail in the United States of America, a nation known as “God’s own country, ” and one with a currency slogan ‘In God, we trust.”
