Nigeria’s former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, thinks the country’s forthcoming elections need the prayers of every well-meaning citizen.
Also, for those who have been praying for the country, Gowon, founder of Nigeria Prays, wants them to intensify their prayers for the successful conduct of the 28 March and 11 April general elections.
Speaking in Nigeria’s northern state of Bauchi, after a visit of the group to the state Governor Isa Yuguda, said the country needed serious prayer for lasting peace since Nigeria cannot develop with the current challenge of insecurity.
Gowon noted that “government at all levels are doing their best; the security agencies, the electoral body are preparing very hard for the success of the elections.
“It is our responsibility to pray for peaceful, credible, free and fair elections that will make us proud as a nation.
“Our desire is for God to grant our leaders wisdom and the ability to lead based on equity and justice and together we can move this country to greater heights.”
He urged Nigerians to try and support whoever emerges winner of the presidential election as well as other elections in the country.
Yuguda, represented by the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Aminu Saleh, while acknowledging that prayer remained very crucial in sustaining Nigeria as a nation in the face of its major challenges, urged Nigerians to join Gowon’s prayer group and pray intensively for peace, love and unity in the country.
