After seven months in darkness following an attack on a major power line in Borno State, north-eastern Nigeria, by insurgents, many residents of the state woke up Wednesday morning to discover that power had been restored to some parts of the state.

The residents last experienced power supply in June 2014 just before the attack on the Damboa Power Line in Damboa, headquarters of Damboa Local Government Area of the state.

Several times, the government had made efforts to restore power supply to no avail. A committee set up by the Federal Government on the issue was also disbanded on Monday with the Minister of State for Power, issuing a 48-hour ultimatum for the restoration of power to the state.

Some of the residents expressed joy that the reconnection came at the time the residents were beginning to experience hot weather.

One of the residents of Tudun-Wada in Maiduguri, the state capital, Ayari James, said many residents had lost hopes that they would ever see power as a result of many failed promises to the people. “But we thank God that the problem has been solved finally,” he said adding that the reconnection would enhance security in the city.

It was learnt that efforts are being made to get other areas of the state reconnected.

This was confirmed by Alhaji Usman Abubakar, the Yerwa District Manager, Yola Electricity Distribution Company, who said: “we have just started after a long period. People should know that this is a gradual process.

“Some areas have already got reconnected, while our technical team is working round the clock to ensure that the entire city is reconnected in a very short while.”

Appealing to the residents to be patient as the company was working hard to ensure power supply to all areas in the city, he expressed belief that in the next few days, electricity supply would be restored to all areas of the city.
