The chairwoman of South Africa’s public broadcaster has resigned from her job, President Jacob Zuma’s office said Wednesday, after she was accused of claiming bogus university qualifications.

South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) chief Ellen Tshabalala, 56, quit amid mounting pressure from the public and from opposition parties for her to step down.

Tshabalala had claimed during her interview for the job last year to have a bachelor of commerce degree and a post graduate labour relations diploma from the University of South Africa.

But when questions were later asked, she told parliament that her certificates had been stolen during a burglary at her home.

The university, however, said there was no record of her receiving any qualifications.

The SABC quoted Tshabalala — who was appointed by Zuma in October 2013 — as saying she quit because “there was just too much pressure”.

Tshabalala is not the first top executive of the beleaguered broadcaster to have been found to have lied about their education.

The company’s chief operating officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, falsely claimed to have a high school certificate.
