Jonathan orders probe into Kano mosque suicide bombing

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered full scale investigation into bomb attacks on the Central Mosque in Kano that left over 120 people killed and 270 injured on Friday. The President also offered his condolences to the government and people of Kano and the relations of the victims of the blasts.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, said President Jonathan’s administration is working hard to put an end to the reprehensible acts of all groups and persons involved in terrorism.

President Jonathan stressed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestation was a despicable and unjustifiable threat to the society, Abati said

“The President calls on relief agencies and medical personnel to deploy every possible effort to assist the injured.

“He also enjoins the general public to heed the call for the donation of blood by the hospitals where the injured are being treated.

“The President further directed the security agencies to launch a full scale investigation and to leave no stone unturned until all agents of terror undermining the right of every citizen to life and dignity, are tracked down and brought to justice.

“Terrorism in all its forms and manifestation is a despicable and unjustifiable threat to our society.

“Government will continue to take steps to put an end to the reprehensible acts of all groups and persons involved in acts of terrorism.’’
The statement called on all Nigerians not to despair in this moment of great trial in the nation’s history but to remain united to confront the common enemy.

“The president is confident that no terrorist act against fellow citizens will destroy the Nigerian spirit to remain positive, resolute and united in the quest for lasting peace and security in the country.’’

What is going on in Nigeria? Has the society disintegrated to such a low level that there is no more value for human life? Do Islamic fundamentalists bomb mosques these days? Where is the sense in that? What is the point being made? Can such actions be taken seriously by anyone? Reckless murder for pleasure? What kind of insecure, cannibalistic Islam is that? One can only conclude that Nigeria’s exceptionally greedy and callous politicians are so ruthless in their pursuit of more money and power, that they are quite prepared to sacrifice innocent lives in the greatest pretense of a national crisis in the modern era. The cowardice necessary to propagate such an illusory and diversionary campaign of indiscriminate terror is astonishing, just as it amounts to treason and crimes against humanity, for which the international community should begin preparing a lengthy, thorough, and equally ruthless charge sheet, against the real backers of this hateful, despicable, and condescending barbarism. If Nigeria is not careful, it will sleep walk into a catastrophic civil war, North against South, against East and West. Biafra will seem like a pleasant holiday in comparison. And from such a stupid and unnecessary outcome, there will be no redemption, no healing, no more second chances. Nigeria, what will be left of it, will be over and gone forever. This is all the insidious outcome of nasty individuals, over many decades, having apportioned the country’s wealth and resources amongst themselves. Their personal quarrels, over more billions, as if any of them is starving, are bringing the country to slow but very steady ruin. What a shame for Africa’s greatest hope! What a crying and terrible shame!!! How very very shameful indeed, for so blessed a country!
