The Nigerian army said Sunday it had recaptured and “secured” the northeastern town of Chibok, where Islamic militants abducted more than 200 schoolgirls in April.
The army recaptured the town Saturday evening from Boko Haram militants, spokesman General Olajide Olaleye told AFP in a text message.
“Mopping up ops ongoing. (The) town is now secured,” he said.
Boko Haram gunmen had seized the town on Thursday, after being flushed out of Mubi, in Adamawa state.
In Mubi itself, the situation is still said to be fluid, with absolute control not yet imposed by Nigeria’s military and civilian authorities.
Officials even said for now, that the people should not return yet.
Tijjani Kalifa and another resident who ran from Mubi, Ahmad Maishanu, said all the churches in the town have been razed.
The hands of 10 people accused of theft were also amputated in public, they said, following similar reports in other Boko Haram areas, including the execution of accused drug dealers and floggings for alleged adulterers.
No females were shown anywhere in the 44-minute video.
