The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 10th Obudu Mountain Race says Cross River Government is ready to host the event scheduled for November 8.

William Archibong, the LOC Chairman, told a news conference in Calabar on Wednesday that preparations were advanced stage for the international event.

Tagged “Mountain race of the stars’’, the 6th African running championship would hold on the Obudu hills.

The race, the current highest paying mountain race in the world, offers star prizes of 50,000 dollars for each for the male and female champions at the event.

Archibong said Gov. Liyel Imoke and two former governors of the state would participate in the VIP category.

He said 130 top runners from Russia, the UK, France, Mexico, Turkey, Columbia and Austria would participate in this year’s race.

According to him, other runners from Benin Republic, Cameroon, Uganda, Eritrea, Kenya and hosts, Nigeria are also invited to the championship.

He said three star runners from Eritrea — Abraham kidane Habtom, Pedro Mamu Shaku and Frezghi Tsegay — had arrived for the event.

“The Day 1 of the event will feature children, youth, the media and VIP races, while Day 2 is for the main event.
