Juventus fell to a first defeat of the Serie A season after Luca Antonini scored in the 94th minute to give Genoa a dramatic 1-0 win over the Italian champions in a Serie A match on Wednesday.

In what was Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon’s 500th Serie A appearance, the Italian champions were left pondering how Genoa managed to inflict only a second league defeat on them in 2014 having dominated the encounter.

Juve striker Carlos Tevez had an effort saved midway through the first half while strike partner Fernando Llorente was denied by the woodwork as the first half ended goalless.

Juve were let down by their final ball as a string of opportunities went begging, until Angelo Ogbonna beat Genoa keeper Mattia Perin but saw an effort come off the post midway through the second half.

Substitute Alvaro Morata was denied twice by Perin in the closing stages as the visitors failed to find a breakthrough, an inability they were made to rue with virtually the last meaningful kick of the match when Antonini met former Juve striker Alessandro Matri’s cutback to beat Buffon and claim a famous win for Genoa at the death.

The result put Genoa in ninth spot on the table with 15 points, seven points behind Juve that remain top ahead of AS Roma by virtue of a better head to head record.

Roma took full advantage of Juve’s shock loss at Genoa by claiming a 2-0 win at home to Cesena courtesy of a goal in each half from Mattia Destro and Danielle De Rossi.

Juve and Roma now have identical records at the top of Serie A after nine matches, with both clubs on 22 points having scored and conceded same number of goals.

Elsewhere in Serie A, AC Milan rose to third with 16 points, ahead of Sampdoria and Udinese on goal difference, courtesy of a 1-1 draw at Cagliari coupled with Sampdoria’s 1-0 loss at Inter Milan and Udinese’s 3-0 loss at Fiorentina.

Meanwhile SS Lazio; in sixth place with 15 points, will have the opportunity of rising to third on the standings and closing the gap on Juve to four points, when it pays Hellas Verona a visit on Thursday night.
