A first half brace from Asisat Oshoala was enough to earn Nigeria a 2-1 win over South Africa in a semi-final match of the African Women’s Championship played this evening in Windhoek, Namibia.

The result from the first semi-final also meant the Super Falcons would be one of Africa’s representatives at the FIFA Women’s World Cup holding in Canada next year.

Nigeria was joined in booking a place at the 2015 World Cup by Cameroun, as a goal two minutes to the end of extra-time gave the Indomitable Lionesses a 2-1 win over Cote D’Ivoire in the second semi-final.

The AWC final would be played on October 25, preceded by the third place play-off between South Africa and Cote D’Ivoire, with the winner booking the final spot as Africa’s representative at next year’s World Cup.

Nigeria went into the first semis in buoyant mood having won its three group stage matches, dominating Bayana Bayana from the off as Oshoala was twice denied by the South Africa goalkeeper early on.

However, the 2014 U-20 Women’s World Cup top scorer eventually broke the deadlock seven minutes before the interval when her close range effort deflected off South African defender Noko Matlou into goal.

The youngster then got her second of the evening on the stroke of half-time when she caught South Africa goalkeeper Philadelphia Mndaweni off her line with a long range volley.

South Africa pulled a goal back midway through the second half through Refiloe whose cornerkick was adjudged to have crossed the line inspite of Onome Ebi’s effortto clear off the line.

The peculiar goal spurred South Africa in search of an equalsing goal, but Nigeria held on to avenge the loss suffered in the last time both sides met at the 2012 edition of the competition.
