Night Games Suggested for Qatar 2022

A former Presient of the Chilean Football Federation, Harold Mayne-Nicholls has suggested that matches at the controversial 2022 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Qatar be played only at night.

That way, the 2022 World Cup could still be staged in summer according to the 53 year old, who is reportedly considering challenging Sepp Blatter at next year’s FIFA presidential election.

Shifting football’s showpiece event to winter of 2022; either earlier from January or later from November, has previously been suggested to help counter the expected harsh weather conditions that comes with the Qatari summer.

According to Mayne-Nicholls however, shifting the 2022 World Cup to winter would be chaotic, stating ”You could play the first games at 7pm (local time), the second games at 10pm and the third matches at 1am.”

He added that ”You could move it towards May, until the middle of June. The weather would still be very warm at night, but the sun is not there and that could help. It’s only an idea. You’d have to investigate a little bit more.”

Mayne-Nicholls’ suggestion would mean the possibility of shifting the Winter Olympics schedule would be avoided, with the FIFA official also musing that the World Cup could commence a month earlier than usual, from May 2022.
