Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton took full advantage of teammate Nico Rosberg’s car trouble to claim the win at today’s Singapore grand prix and also take the lead on the Formula 1 drivers championship standing.
Hamilton had edged Rosberg by just 0.007s to claim his sixth pole position of the season in a hugely competitive qualifying session at Marina Bay on Saturday evening but found the main race relatively easier.
In the end, the Briton finished ahead of Red Bull duo Sebastien Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo while Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso finished in fourth after his challenge for a podium place faded in the closing laps.
Former championship leader Rosberg meanwhile began the race from the pits no thanks to problem with his car’s electronics, which had given him some trouble in Saturday’s qualifying session and eventually forced him to retire in lap 14 today.
As a result, Hamilton now leads Rosberg by three points in the drivers championship with five races left in the season, with Ricciardo now 57 points behind Rosberg in third.
