A flawless first half performance inspired Tottenham Hotspur to a 4-0 win over fellow Londoners Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League while Ryan Shawcross earned a point for Stoke City at 10-man Hull City in another match.

Harry Redknapp’s return to White Hart Lane, where he was manager between 2008 and 2012, was one to forget as his QPR side got brushed aside by a rampant Spurs side that led 3-0 by half-time.

Last season, Spurs brought in a handful of players who failed to live up to expectations last season but a couple of them – Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela – were on form today as the north London club made it two wins from two this season.

The Lilywhites began the match on the up and went ahead after 12 minutes when Belgian attacker Chadli, who joined last season from Dutch club FC Twente for £7m, showed great composure to dink the ball over QPR goalkeeper Robert Green.

It nearly became 2-0 for Spurs midway through the first half but Christian Eriksen’s freekick came off the underside of the QPR crossbar and bounced away to safety.

It did not take long however for the home side to double its lead as defender Eric Dier scored his second in as many league matches when he headed in record signing Erik Lamela’s cornerkick on the half-hour mark.

Chadli then made it 3-0 for Spurs after 37 minutes, turning in a cross by Lamela for his second goal of the day and Lamela’s second assist of the day and third in two league matches.

Chadli was involved in the fourth goal for Spurs which came just after the hour mark when the Belgian found Danny Rose, whose pass was turned in by Togo international Emmanuel Adebayor.

QPR thought it had scored a consolation goal off Joey Barton’s cornerkick seven minutes from time but the referee ruled out the goal for a foul in the Spurs area as the home side held on for a win which sends it to the top of the league ahead of Chelsea and Swansea City on goal difference.

In Sunday’s other Premier League match played, goal-line technology was deployed in awarding Peter Odemwingie’s Stoke City a goal in a dramatic 1-1 draw against Sone Aluko’s Hull City at the KC Stadium.

Hull were down to 10 men after only 14 minutes when James Chester was given a straight red card for a last-man challenge on Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan who was capitalising on a poor back pass by Jake Livermore.

Despite Chester’s sending off however, Hull took the lead just before half time when Nikica Jelavic reacted quickest to the rebound after Asmir Begovic tipped a Tom Huddlestone shot towards the Croatian striker.

But with time running out, Ryan Shawcross earned a point for Stoke in the 83rd minute, bundling the ball past Allan McGregor at the second attempt after the Hull keeper had kept out his first effort off a rebound of Phil Bardsley initial scoffed effort which had come off the post.
