Nigerian football is poised to avoid getting suspended indefinitely by FIFA from all football activities following the reinstatement of the Nigerian Football Federation executive committee ahead of today’s deadline set by the world football governing body.
The Aminu Maigari-led board of the NFF was restored to office this morning after a regional High Court in Nigeria vacated an earlier interlocutory injunction by a court in Plateau State restraining the board from administrative duties.
The injunction led to FIFA suspending Nigeria from all football activities due to government interference until the restrained NFF officials were returned to office before a July 15 deadline, later extended to July 17 due to a strike embarked upon by Nigerian court workers.
With the vacation of the initial injunction however, Nigeria is expected to avoid a longer ban from football, which would have seen the country’s U-20 women’s national team bear the immediate effect by being expelled from the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup starting August 5 in Canada.
Already, Nigeria Premier League club Sunshine Stars of Akure was forced to cancel a friendly match in Benin Republic due to the initial suspension by FIFA.
