Nigeria risks receiving an international ban from world football governing body FIFA following the sacking of the Nigeria Football Federation executive committee by a court and subsequent appointment of a sole administrator by the Minister of Sport.

A High Court in Jos, Plateau State had on Thursday granted ‘an interlocutory injunction’ to suspend elected NFF president Aminu Maigari, his executive committee and the NFF congress.

As a result of the injunction; sought by Premier League club Nembe City, Nigeria’s sports minister Tammy Danagogo appointed Lawrence Longyir Katken as acting secretary general of the NFF until the matter was resolved.

That court injunction and appointment however goes against FIFA regulations which states that national football federations must not be subject to government control and all football administrative issues must be resolved without interference from the federation’s home government.

Nigeria had previously been threatened with an international ban by FIFA for government interference in 2010 after the Nigerian government annohnced it would withdraw the NFF from international competition for two years.

That move from the goveenment then came following a dismal campaign at the 2010 World Cup in which the Super Eagles crashed out in the group stage. The threat was however not carried out as the government rescinded its decision.

In another development, Alhaji Maigari was reportedly arrested by security operatives this morning for unknown reasons, though he has since been released.
