Algeria have received a 50,000 Swiss Francs fine from world football governing body FIFA for the actions of their fans during the final World Cup group stage match against Russia.

Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev had laser light shone to his eye just before Islam Slimani headed in Algeria’s equaliser, which was enough to earn a 1-1 draw and see Algeria qualify from the group ahead of Russia.

A statement by the Algerian Federation read ”The Disciplinary Committee of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has condemned the Algerian Football Federation to pay a fine of CHF 50,000 (Swiss francs) and also issued a reprimand against the FAF for inappropriate behaviour of Algerian fans.”

The statement further read ”The Algerian Football Federation deplores the irresponsible behaviour of some fans and recalls that pyrotechnics and lasers are strictly prohibited in the football grounds.”

The Algerian Federation also appealed to fans that they ”act with civility and have impeccable behaviour when expressing their support for their team.”

Algeria had qualified for the knockout stage for the first time in history but fell to a 2-1 loss to Germany after extra-time in a second round match on Monday night.
