2015 elections: Fayose urges INEC, security agencies to firm up

Abuja – The governor-elect of Ekiti state, Mr Ayo Fayose, has called on INEC and security agencies to brace up ahead of the 2015 general elections to check the behaviour of politicians.

Fayose made the call on Thursday in Abuja at a forum of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said that politicians are predisposed to playing’ rough’.

“Politicians are not good. It is the referee that controls the game. When you get to the field every potential politician wants to play rough, it is the referee that checks the excesses of all of us.

“Anywhere you find a good referee he would check the excesses of politicians. The police must deal with anybody, irrespective of how highly placed you are.

“The police are a form of referee, soldiers a form of referee; we are a peculiar nation. Nobody should tell me that they should not bring soldiers in an election.

“The moment you don’t bring stiff security agencies, politicians must bring thugs, they live by it. The ball in 2015 is in the hands of security agencies, they have to be firm,” he said.

Fayose urged the party faithful to desist from supporting their party and its members even when they were erring in their actions.

He urged INEC and security agencies not to favour any individual in the forthcoming elections.

“INEC must be strengthened to penalise politicians. I am not saying in terms of procedures to the elections but procedures during the election they must be penalised.

“If you find PDP agents and you prove it that they are guilty they must be disciplined.

“When INEC comes to your state and tells you ‘play according to the rules’ and you don’t and you get away with it, everybody will be doing it.

“In my opinion, politicians must be treated as politicians. When you cannot win election, they want to take alternative routes; they must be checked,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the 2015 election would indeed be a success.
