A stoppage time goal from Haris Seferovic saw Switzerland come from a goal down to claim a dramatic 2-1 win over Ecuador in the opening Group E match of the FIFA World Cup.

Ener Valencia gave Ecuador the lead midway through the first half, left unmarked to head home a Walter Ayovi free-kick from six yards out.

The South Americans seemed content on defending the lead afterwards as Switzerland mounted the pressure for an equaliser but found no way through by half-time.

The breakthrough for Switzerland came two minutes into the second half through half-time substitute Admir Mehmedi’s close range header off a cornerkick.

Swiss striker Josip Drmic then had a goal questionably ruled out for offside with 20 minutes left to play. It was to be Drmic’s last contribution to the game as he was replaced minutes later by Seferovic.

Both sides would create half chances as time ran down and after breaking up an Ecuador attack, the Swiss launched a counter which resulted in Seferovic side-footing the winner in the third minute of stoppage time.
