Nigeria’s queen of gospel music, Kefee Obareki Don Momoh, has been reported dead, after suffering from brain damage with numerous nervous seizures.
The award winning gospel singer, whose music career started at an early age while singing in her Church choir, and became famous for her gospel song ‘Branama’ released in 2003, died in a United States hospital where she was slowly recovering from coma.
While her management is yet to release an official statement on her death, a close friend of Teddy Esosa Momoh, Kefee’s husband, an on air personality, confirmed the news of her death on the popular WAZOBIA FM, in the early hours of Friday.
Kefee, also popular for her album ‘Kokoroko’ is said to have gone into a coma, after collapsing on a 14-hour flight on her way to Chicago more than a week ago, and was later diagnosed of having pre-eclampsia- pregnancy induced high blood pressure.
The gospel music sensation from Nigeria’s Niger Delta region brought a breath of fresh air to the Nigerian gospel music scene with a unique blend of rich dialect, colourful costume and trained dance steps.
After she reportedly went into coma, some Nigerian celebrities on various social media platforms had expressed concern for her, praying for her recovery.
Reacting to the news of death today, Frank Edwards a Nigerian contemporary gospel singer and songwriter said to his fans on Twitter: ” I lost a colleague (Kefee) so it won’t be nice to drop d song today…Let’s show respekt today. ”
