Lagos – A 30-year-old housewife, Rukayat Sulaiman, was on Wednesday brought before an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly hitting the head of her neighbour’s son with an object.

Sulaiman, who lives at No.10, Olofin St., Apapa, Lagos, is facing a one-count charge of assault.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unnah, said that the accused committed the offence at the same address on May 6 at 1.00 p.m.

Unnah said that the accused hit the head of a seven-year old son of her neighbour, Sadiq Ahmed, with an object and caused him injury.

He said that Ahmed’s mother, on hearing her son’s cry, rushed out and noticed that the boy was in serious pain.

The prosecutor said that the accused was arrested after Ahmed’s mother reported the incident to the police.

Unnah said that the offences contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 171 stipulates three years imprisonment upon conviction for any person who unlawfully assaults another and thereby does him harm.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In his ruling, Senior Magistrate M. Owumi granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

He ordered the sureties to show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government, and have their addresses verified by the prosecutor, as part of their bail conditions.

Owumi adjourned further hearing in the case till June 5. (NAN)
