Andy Murray got his French Open campaign underway with a four sets win over Andrey Golubev while former women’s top player Caroline Wozniacki became the latest high profile player to suffer an early exit from Paris.

Fourth seeded Murray was coasting against Golubev, winning the opening two sets without fuss only to stumble in the third set with a slew of unforced errors and give his Kazakh opponent a way back in the match.

But the former Wimbledon champion regained his form to wrap up a 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Golubev and join his rivals Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in the second round.

Also through to the second round today are fifth seed David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco, Philipp Kohlschreiber as well as Frenchmen Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet.

Ferrer, who lost to Nadal in last year’s, got a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 win over Igor Sijsling while fellow Spaniard Verdasco beat Michael Llodra 6-2, 7-6, 7-6. Llodra announced his retirement from tennis after the match.

Meanwhile in the women’s draw, Wozniacki endured more misery as the Dane was beaten 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 by Yanina Wickmayer in her first round match at the French Open.

Wozniacki, who recently separated from former golf number one player Rory McIlroy same week they got engaged, fell to a disappointing defeat which sustained her record of never winning a grand slam title.

Elsewhere, 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic beat Caroline Garcia 6-1, 6-3, Sloane Stephens of the United States got a close 6-4, 7-5 win over Peng Shaui while Jelena Jankovic came from a set down to beat Sharon Fichman in three sets for her 100th career grand slam match win.
