Abuja – Peter Dedevbo, the head coach of the Falconets, on Saturday said there was not going to be any automatic shirt for any player invited to the team’s camp.

Dedevbo said there was no guarantee that the players who featured for the team during the qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup would make the final squad.

The national under-20 women football team are preparing for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup scheduled for Canada in August.

As part of their preparations for the mundial, the Falconets beat the Idoh male team from Gwagwalada 1-0 in a test game on Saturday.

“I am looking for certain qualities in the players, and it has to be players with such qualities that will make the team,” he said.

The coach said that was why six players were dropped from the team’s camp earlier in the week, because they did not meet expectations during the screening.

“There is no automatic shirt for any player. That is why I invited some other players from the women league to see if they will live up to expectations.

“And, already, I have seen three new players who will make the final squad. So, they may get the shirts even before the old players.

“I dropped six players after the screening because they did not meet our expectations.

“Presently, I have 27 players in camp, with three players to join us later from the Super Falcons, to give us 30 altogether,” he said.

Dedevbo also told NAN he was happy with the choice of new assistant coach, Wemimo Mathew, for the team, saying she would bring her experience to bear in the team.

“She’s a woman, an ex-player for this country and was also part of the coaching crew which took this team to the finals of the U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2010. So, her experience will help this team a lot,” he said.

The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup is scheduled for Aug. 5 to Aug. 25 in Canada.
